Hiroaki Kuromiya taught Ukrainian, Russian, and Soviet history at Indiana University, USA, until his retirement in 2021. He is the author of "Freedom and Terror in the Donbas: A Ukrainian-Russian Borderland, 1870s-1990s" (1998), "Stalin (Profiles in Power)" (2005), "Conscience on Trial: The Fate of Fourteen Pacifists in Stalin's Ukraine, 1952-1953" (2012), "Zrozumity Donbas" (2015), and other books.
