Maria Popova is an Associate Professor of Political Science at McGill University and Scientific Director of the Jean Monnet Centre Montreal. She holds a BA in Spanish Literature and Government from Dartmouth College and a PhD in Government from Harvard University. She is also an Editor of the Cambridge Elements Series on Politics and Society from Central Europe to Central Asia. Much of her current research focuses on the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war on European democracies, the trajectories of reformist politicians in Eastern Europe, and Canada’s growing links with the EU in the context of global realignments.
Dr. Popova's new book, Russia and Ukraine: Entangled Histories, Diverging States, co-authored with Oxana Shevel, explores the roots of the Russo-Ukrainian war and was published by Polity Press in 2024.
